Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra) Cartaxo-nortenho

A bird of widely varied plumage depending upon the season, but always with a prominant supercilium. The only bird it is usually confused with is the Common Stonechat, but the supercilium is an easy give-away. A visitor to the area during both Spring and Autumn migrations, the male's striking breeding plumage is seen during April. It is an early southward migrant with Autumn sightings taking place in September. They prefer low perches from which to spot their insect prey.
