(Ruddy) Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) Rola-do-mar

In its summer plumage the Ruddy Turnstone is unmistakeable with its short, sharp black beak, white belly and mottled brown back, but in winter it can be a great deal harder to distinguish from other shorebirds. However its behaviour is unmistakeable for it does what it says on the lid and turns stones to search for small crustaceans hidden underneath. The Portuguese name translates as the "Sea Dove" after its mottled summer plumage. It is often found on its own, but often also in small bands of individuals. In flight a prominent white "cigar" along its back, white wing-bands and diagnostic white shoulders at the base of the upper wing.
